More Poems and Poetry By a Motherless Daughter - The Reunion A Poem For My Mother & Father
77
"Daddy don't leave us!"
I heard myself cry,
"I know Mama is waiting,
But I'm not ready for you to die.
I know that you miss her
I miss her too,
Oh Daddy, my daddy,
Without you what will I do?
I laid my head down
With tears on my cheeks,
As he stroked my hair
I drifted off to sleep.
While I was sleeping
In a dream I could see
An angel with pink wings,
She was talking to me.
She said "my precious girl,
Dry your tears, don't you cry
You've always known
That we don't really die.
Your Daddy is tired,
And he knows you are too.
His illness has been hard
On both he and you.
You've done your best
But his body is weak,
Confused by confusion,
Barely able to speak.
He's ready my darling,
To go on to another
To reunite with his wife.
I shook my head at this angel
Tears streaming down my face,
"I don't want him to go,
I want him to stay!"
"I know you do sweetheart,"
The angel softly said,
Looking sadly at me
She patted my head.
"Come with me for a moment
I've something I want you to see."
What she showed me that morning
Was how it would be.
I saw my father
Standing so proud and so tall,
Without his walker or cane,
He didn't need them at all!
He was able to run,
He ran right up a hill
If I close my eyes now,
I can see him there still.
Sweet was the music
From some angel's harp,
My dad in his uniform
His creases so sharp.
The light all around him
Beautiful golden and bright,
I watched from afar
Keeping him in my sight.
His dark curly hair
No longer thinning and gray,
Tight lines of pain at his eyes
Had faded away.
His smile was beaming
His laughter I heard,
It said more to me
Than could any word.
I wanted to call to him
"Daddy, I am here!"
Instead I silently watched
As he picked up his gear.
My Dad the Marine
Of whom I was so proud,
Was not there all alone
There was suddenly a crowd.
They gathered around him
As he put down his gun,
They were laughing and smiling,
It seemed he knew everyone.
"Who are they?" I wondered
From where I still sat,
"Who are all these people
That are hugging my dad?"
"They are his family,
His sister, his brothers,
His aunts and his uncles,
His father and mother.
They've all come to greet him."
The angel replied
They have waited so patiently
For such a long time."
I studied their faces
And then knew it to be true
For there was my grandmother,
My aunt and uncles were there too.
So happy were they
To see my daddy once more
To be a family together
As they'd been before.
As I watched them all
With tears in my eyes,
I was happy to see
That love never dies.
Then off into the distance
I saw Daddy look,
The expression on his face
Like something I read once in a book,
As though he were searching
Expecting to see
Someone that he loved,
Was he looking for me?
In that instant I saw
As his eyes filled with tears
As she ran into his arms
As he held her so near
As they looked at each other
She was crying too
I heard her whisper to him
"I've been waiting for you."
Heads bent together
Holding on to each other
Smiling and laughing
Were my father and mother.
I saw her reach up
Whisper something in his ear
What she said to him then,
I could not hear.
Toward me they both turned
And I heard them say,
"We love you dear daughter
It will all be okay.
We will be here to meet you
We'll be together someday."
As the golden bright light
Began fading away
Like the setting of the sun
At the end of the day,
They blew me one last kiss
As they turned to go
Over that hill,
I remember it so.
Holding hands as they turned
I saw a flash of feathery pink
Then my mom turned her head
And she flashed me a wink.
As the last of that golden light
Faded far and away,
From sleep at his bedside
I'd begun to awake.
His hand was still resting
On top of my hair,
But I knew that my Daddy
Was no longer there,
For the smile on his face
Was the same one I'd seen,
When he met my mother again
Inside of my dream.

It was so lovely, K. To love is to grieve but not forever. God bless you and your family.
Your poem has touched my heart and it has made me cry. So sorry for your loss.
This is how I see re-uniting with my family when the time comes.
I'm sorry you lost both of your parents. Like you I still miss my Father and it's been so very long.
Oh, k., so sorry to hear about your dad. Keeping you in my prayers.
Oh that was so lovely, the tears are falling all over my face as I type- thank you
That was a remarkably beautiful piece of writing. So, sorry for your loss. There is peace and serenity found in your words. This is a light for many to see.
Kristen I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you for sharing this incredibly beautiful piece of writing with us.
I wish I could say more, words fail me.
Kindest regards.
What an amazing piece of your heart you've managed to put into such and eloquent poem and tribute to both of your parents and I hope you see it is one to you and to Faith as well. Letting him go home to your Mom is such a wonderful way of letting go, though it doesn't take away the sting. What a gorgeous couple they are! And, just think, the love they shared now has lasted all of these years and is renewed now and shared with you! This is just incredible!
This is so beautiful, tears.. I thought of so many of my family there waiting. Thank you. Blessigs. The way you brought in the hill, your Mother, a Marine, amazing poetry....

Sharyn
So glad you found me on hubpages, so that I now can follow you.
The part where your dad sees your mum again running towards him choked me completely.
This was absolutely beautiful.
This is so amazing! You expressed yourself so well for something that happened so recently. What a special way to be able to remember you father. This was so touching. I am so glad I came across it! Bless you! May you find comfort.
What a wonderful story in poetry to your parents and family. It made me feel sad yet happy that your daddy has gone home to be amongst them. Your mom has him finally again by her side. What a beautiful young couple they were and to think they had such beautiful children with having you and your sister. Life is to be lived to the fullest and death to be acknowledged for what it is a reunion with loved ones and a trip to eternity together. You shared this beautifully in your verse.
Hi Kristen, Sorry for your loss. Your father was a blessed man to have you as his daughter and you to have him as your dad. This tribute will be around a long time to help keep his memory alive. Thank you for sharing with us :)
Oh! so very, very pretty! You have an amazing talent. This poem moved me very much. My mother and sister are both gone. I look forward to the day when they will be there to meet me. May God bless you! Thank you for sharing this. You are a blessing! I voted up, up and in the hearts of those we love. thank you!
......what a glorious, heartfelt and sincere poetic scapbook of memories - the greatest story ever told - because it belongs to you - and as you know we all have our own greatest stories ever told - my mum and dad were my two best friends and it's better to have loved in this life than not to have loved at all.
