K. Burns Darling

My name is Kristen Burns-Darling and these are my basics;

I am a forty something mother of three, Joseph, who is seventeen and a senior in high school;  and two daughters, Jordan, a sixteen year old junior, and Jamisen who just turned four.   My husband Michael and I were married in March of 1992, and I was a Navy wife for the first fifteen of those years.

In 2006, I moved myself, my two older children, and our two dogs, Pete and Mandy, back to our hometown to care for my aging father who had become a fall risk, and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  My husband followed after retirement, and our youngest daughter was born in May of 2007, twelve years after her older sister.

For five years the six of us, our two dogs, my dad's dog, and a lone sucker fish named Rocky Fishola, who having outlived all other fish, now resided alone in a sixty gallon tank, all lived togethere in my childhood home, while I juggled my father's care with raising my children, and snuck some writing in here and there.    '

My father passed away, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on August 20, 2011. The last leg of our journey together was long and difficult, but even now, knowing all that I know, I wouldn't trade one moment of it, I wouldn't change a thing, for every sacrifice and comprimise that was made along the way, gave my children and I a host of precious moments and memories that would otherwise never have been.

In the  twenty years that we've been married, we've lived in a lot of different places, including San Diego, California, and Memphis, Tennessee, but home is in Orange County, California, where, all of our immediate family members live with in a ten mile radius, so we are literally surrounded by family.  I am very family oriented, and am not ashamed or embarrassed to say that my husband and children are the center of my universe, that I count certain family members as being among my closest friends,

I have been writing for what seems like all of my life, or at least since I was old enough to hold a pencil.  I believe that the pen is mightier than the sword, and that the right words can effect change,  influence hearts,  and lighten the load.

 The very best piece of advice I ever recieved about writing was from my freshman English instructor who told me, "Write what you know."  So I write a lot about  my family,  life as a military family, parenting across multi-generations,  and caring for an elderly parent.

I try to live everyday as if it were the only one, and to never have regrets,  because I believe that in everything, even the regretable,  there is a lesson to be learned.
